However, proper collection and separation can make a significant difference. Used engine oil collection involves the gathering of the product from various sources, including fuel stations, car repair shops. The exercise is conducted by intermediaries who purchase the oil from garages, nationwide, further selling to some Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified recycling companies. Recycling used engine oil is a critical step in conserving natural resources.
The process of refining used oil reduces
the need for virgin oil extraction, which in turn reduces the depletion of
natural resources.
A study by EPA reveals, recycling used vehicular oil saves approximately
1.3 gallons of crude oil per gallon of refined oil. This translates to a
significant conservation of natural resources, as the energy required to
extract, process, and transport crude oil.
Therefore, proper collection and separation
of used oil can significantly reduce the risk of pollution. By collecting used
oil in designated facilities, we can prevent it from entering waterways, soil
and groundwater.
Advanced separation technologies can also
remove contaminants and impurities from used oil, making it safer for recycling
and reuse.
Achieving sustainable vehicular oil
disposal requires a concerted effort from stakeholders, vehicle owners,
mechanics and oil collection facilities as well as individuals that must work
together to ensure that used oil is collected and separated properly.
Government and policymakers must also support sustainable oil disposal
practices through regulations, incentives, and education campaigns.
The importance of oil collection and
separation in achieving sustainable vehicular oil disposal cannot be
overstated. Let us take action today to create a healthier planet tomorrow.
