IMPACT OF IMPROPER DISPOSAL USED OIL IN GHANA

Have you ever thought of the negative impact of improper disposal of used oil? It very shocking to realize people( mechanic,driver, and industrial workers) in this 21st century dispose their used oil improperly. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under its rules and regulations is requires an Environmental Impact Assessment( EIA) for project. The increase in the improper way of disposing used oil in Ghana has compelled the EPA to raised concern toward that action of the people of the country Individuals, ignorantly dump or dispose used oil illegally, especially from vehicles and industrial activities. With the visit to some Mechanic industry and drivers of Accra, Ghana, these were obtained “The used oils are been disposed on the ground to dissolve into the ground. A mechanic stated. Also, one of them said, some people come around to purchase the used oil to eradicate pests and parasites that attack their crops. They stated clearly that thy do not EPA regulations and rules governing the used oil disposal. Where a few people talked about the recycling of the oils. This clearly indicate how ignorantly and illegally oil is disposed in Ghana. According to the EPA, improper oil disposal can contaminate aquatic life and pollute soil. Therefore, the EPA has laid down rules and regulations which governing the change and disposal of used oil. - Used oil must be stored in tanks which is in a good storage condition. -Records must be taken of used oil acceptance and delivery. - Used oil handlers must take steps to prevent leaks and spills. -The handlers of used oil must clean up spills and leaks, and recycle the used oil. And more regulations and rules. Statistics show that over 1000 tons of used oil are generated every month in Accra. Out of which 20% of them are properly disposed of while 80% contributes to water pollution in Accra and beyond. The Deputy Director of the EPA, Mr. John Addo statement concerning the improper oil disposal “ Improper oil disposal is a serious environmental issue that we need to address urgently. We urge all stakeholders to take responsibility for their actions and dispose of used oil in an environmentally friendly manner.” The EPA encourages residents and businesses(mechanics) to take their used oil designated used oil collection centers for proper preservation and recycling.
